Gender and Stereotypes

My study on the stereotypes "Get Out"

During near the opening scenes of “Get Out” where we are introduced to Chris, our main protagonist of the film, who is a black man living in the busy streets of a new York town, with the occupation of a photographer, with no indications of coming from wealth or possessing much of it in his current time. Chris has a partner, Rose, who is a white woman who is suggestively born into wealth as the audience then learn and discover that Rose wants Chris to visit her parents who live in a quiet, owned suburban lot, withholding the information that on the lot is a costly mansion like home. the stereotype of the black man being less wealthy, than the white woman, is displayed prominently throughout the movie. It is suggested that the stereotype of a “lower” black man vs a suburban white middle class family.

In the film, from near 10 minutes in, Chris begins a phone call with his friend, who is a TSI agent. Chris' friend begins to exaggerate about Chris being at a "white people's home" which can be taken into a stereotypical context, of black people's thoughts concerning white people's actions. This stereotype is prominently shown here as it can be an insight or foreshadow on what is to come. Gender stereotypes shown further on is when the parents of Rose, say "this is one of our servants Georgina," this line comes from Rose's father, who begins to show Chris around his costly home, and runs into Georgina, a Black maid, connotations towards Slavery can easily be made here as we are then also introduced, to male housekeeper, who is clearly also of black decent, Rose's father than makes the comment " i know it seems awkward.. you know the white man, the black housekeepers..." and then proceeds to tell the story on how they go there, this shows the gender stereotype of the man in charge of the female, in concerns to Georgina. Most stereotypes portrayed in "Get Out" are negative as it points out problems within secret society
